Yoga & Movement - Listening Wellness Center
Listening is a non-profit center whose mission is to promote wholistic health and wellness for the Central Massachusetts community. The name Listening is inspired by a Chinese acupuncture point. This point helps you to hear outside sounds and your inner, intuitive voice — creating balance between inner and outer, active and quiet. This harmony is the road to health.

The ancient art, science, and philosophy of Yoga is several thousand years old. It has stood the test of time. It is also a therapy. The poses of yoga offer a training capable of creating a vigorous body, well-functioning internal organs, and an alert mind. The poses can give a variety of effects: stimulating, calming, energizing, building stamina and concentration, internally soothing, etc. The standing poses give vitality, the sitting poses are calming, twists are cleansing, supine poses are restful, balancing poses give a sense of lightness, and backbends are exhilarating. Many chronic physical ailments can be improved, as in areas such as the joints, the liver, kidneys, and heart.
In addition to the physical benefits of yoga, practice of the postures invites us to focus and quiet the mind as we move seamlessly from one pose to another, encouraging the experience of moment-to-moment awareness that brings balance, flexibility, and strength to the mind, as well as to the body.
Yoga classes at Listening range from one hour to one hour and a half depending on the teacher and the class.  They are ongoing throughout the year. Drop-ins are welcome, but it’s a good idea to call first if you’re a new student. Please wear loose comfortable clothing and allow 2-3 hours after a heavy meal before doing yoga.

Yoga with Loren

Loren Magruder, 500RYT returns in the new year to in-person classes at Listening’s Yoga Studio. After the imposed sabbatical of these quiet and disorienting times, she is looking forward to gathering in community on Sunday mornings from 9:30-11am (beginning January 8th) and Thursday evenings (beginning January 12th) from 7-8:30pm.  A slightly different format with the Sunday classes as they will be offered, like the Thursday Journeys, as a 10 week series and must be paid in full before the class – $160-$200 sliding scale.  That said, no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Thursdays are often more vigorous, Sundays more gentle…. ALL are welcome and beginners are encouraged.

Loren has been studying yoga for 22 years, teaching on and off for 17 and is a perennial student of the yogasana (postures) and the philosophy of the Yoga Sutras and the BhagavadGita.  Her main influences and teachers include Eileen Muir, BKS Iyengar, Sri Aurobindo and the psychologists Carl Jung and Marion Woodman.

Since 2002, the Listening Senior Yoga Program, in cooperation with the Barre Senior Center continues to improve the health of senior citizens in the Barre area. Senior yoga students find that they are not only healthier as a result of the program, but more able to perform essential daily tasks such as tying their shoes. The program brings health, practical skills, and joy to its participants throughout the year!

At the Barre Senior Center, the class is named Chair Yoga. Chair Yoga decreases tension and stress and increases a persons flexibility, strength and balance. In class a chair is used as a prop to enhance our sense of safety and stability as we learn about supporting the wellness of our whole being. All are invited to try!
