ABOUT YOGA

The ancient art, science, and philosophy of Yoga is several thousand years old. It has stood the test of time. It is also a therapy. The poses of yoga offer a training capable of creating a vigorous body, well-functioning internal organs, and an alert mind. The poses can give a variety of effects: stimulating, calming, energizing, building stamina and concentration, internally soothing, etc. The standing poses give vitality, the sitting poses are calming, twists are cleansing, supine poses are restful, balancing poses give a sense of lightness, and backbends are exhilarating. Many chronic physical ailments can be improved, as in areas such as the joints, the liver, kidneys, and heart.
In addition to the physical benefits of yoga, practice of the postures invites us to focus and quiet the mind as we move seamlessly from one pose to another, encouraging the experience of moment-to-moment awareness that brings balance, flexibility, and strength to the mind, as well as to the body.
Yoga classes at Listening range from one hour to one hour and a half depending on the teacher and the class.  They are ongoing throughout the year. Drop-ins are welcome, but it’s a good idea to call first if you’re a new student. Please wear loose comfortable clothing and allow 2-3 hours after a heavy meal before doing yoga.

SENIOR YOGA

Since 2002, the Listening Senior Yoga Program, in cooperation with the Barre Senior Center continues to improve the health of senior citizens in the Barre area. Senior yoga students find that they are not only healthier as a result of the program, but more able to perform essential daily tasks such as tying their shoes. The program brings health, practical skills, and joy to its participants throughout the year!

Chair Yoga decreases tension and stress and increases a persons flexibility, strength and balance. In class a chair is used as a prop to enhance our sense of safety and stability as we learn about supporting the wellness of our whole being. All are invited to try!

Yoga with Lisa

Yin yoga is a wonderful complement to any sport, physical exercise, or other type of yang yoga. It targets the deep connective tissues rather than muscles. It is a slower, more meditative practice that gets us out of the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and into the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). You will learn how to breathe through discomfort and sit with your thoughts. Adding a yin yoga practice just once or twice a week to your routine can give you more mobile joints and connective tissue, increased flexibility, better circulation, and decreased stress and anxiety.

Each class will begin with a grounding exercise. This will be followed by a practice of yin yoga postures that will be held for three to five minutes each.

The class will conclude in a restorative savasana (lying on your back) so your body and mind can integrate everything from the class and give you time and space to drop into a relaxing, sometimes blissful state, before you start your day.

Props will be used. A yoga mat, two yoga blocks, and two blankets will be used in each class. They are available at the yoga studio, or feel free to bring your own.

*If you will be away or are sick you can roll the classes you miss over to another 8 week session.
